Beat Journal: Sheriff Arpaio on Immigration

In this weeks study of the news coverage in immigration I stumbled upon many articles surrounding one of Phoenix's Sheriffs. Joe Arpaio; who has recently been in the news for his creation of a Tent city for illegal immigrants.

This tent city is surrounded by a tall electric fence peaked with barbed wire, it has no amenities other than the necessities to live. He also has 'chain-gangs' of immigrants that are on display cleaning the streets of Phoenix connected by the feet in shackles.

The reason I focused on Arpaio was because there were many oppositional views from news source to news source. From Phoenix print papers a stance was taken that showed Arpaio in a negative light, through giving background information that would show his other failed attempts in police enforcement.
The blog from the Chicago website imagine2020.com showed a heavily negative view of the sheriff pointing out such quotes he made as: “This is a population of criminals more adept perhaps at escape,” the Sheriff says. “But this is a fence they won’t want to scale because they risk receiving quite a shock - literally.” (in reference to the tent-city he created).
Finally the clash between MSNBC's video coverage and Lou Dobbs coverage on CNN were black and white. The reporter in MSNBC had a worried tone to her voice, and many times gave inflections jesting towards her disagreement with Sheriff Apraios actions. Lou Dobbs on the other hand said that he is an American hero of sorts, and his actions will hopefully not be the last to uphold U.S. immigration policies. Also it is interesting to note that federally there has been no action or comments from the federal government on Apraios actions.

  1. Nice range of sources, Daniel, on an interesting person. Your writing is a little sloppy. Take care in expressing yourself. This is a journalism class! Credit: 8/10
