Journal Entry 1: Will Obama change immigration

The state of immigration law in America currently relies on many laws and policies created a very long time ago. Due to the increasing intelligence and understanding humans accumulate each generation of culture, society, and anthropology; we should realize that some things that worked years ago, no longer belong in todays society. Take for example slavery in the past it was seen as a commonplace happening in our country, now it is considered abhorrent.

With the inauguration of President Obama, law reform can be lobbied for again, and this time the president will consider our opinions, as well as his own and his advisors. A Prominent issue currently in the immigration law reform push is to create a moratorium on raids and deportations of immigrants in the U.S.

By instilling a halt of the aforementioned activities, it will provide time to completely focus on the reform of immigration laws and labor policies; instead of splitting efforts between immigrant protection and policy reform. By bringing immigrant workers out of the underground economy, it could greatly benefit the country's economic growth.

In other news, Immigrant supporters and religious leaders from across the country marched to the Southwest Washington headquarters of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency today. Their attempt was to lower the raised enforcement of immigration laws given under the power of former President George W. Bush. With speeches in spanish and english, and cries of "Si se puede!"--- "yes we can!", a extremely diverse crowed gathered to support the cause.

While other situations are more important for Obama to focus on currently, such as the economy, immigration activists realize this and are nationally discussing how to focus their efforts on both supporting Obama's decisions and changing immigration law.

Most people find change hard to deal with and do not choose to look for the long-term benefits that could occur. Luckily there are those of us who do feel the pressure to change, and realize that through our efforts we can revive old laws that are currently plaguing our societies. So I implore you to keep your eyes open, read the news and see what problem occur consistently enough to be considered a "theme". There is probably and old law or policy in need of reform for todays issues, instead of trying to fix problems of the past.

  1. Good introduction to the subject, Daniel. It's a great topic, and you'll learn a lot by following the news in this area. Starting with your next post, I want you to cite specific example of news coverage of this topic. Tell me where the news is coming from, how objective it is, whether there's a point of view or cultural assumptions being communicated, etc. Reread the article I posted on blackboard about beat reporting. Stay disciplined. Make sure your writing is clear and persuasive. Be a smart critic.

I like the resources that you cite above, but you didn't link them. The poll is great.
